Politicians and energy industry discuss future of supply – energetic use of biomass with a difficult standing

The Energy Transition Congress 2022 of the German Energy Agency DENA took place in Berlin from 14 to 15 November. Dr. Johannes R. Gerstner took part in the industry meeting on behalf of the European Fireplaces Working Group. Among other things, the future of building was discussed with the Federal Minister of Construction, Klara Geywitz, and many representatives of the federal states and municipalities were also present.

According to Dr. Gerstner, the “complete ignorance of politics and administration towards biomass as a necessary component of the heat transition” was striking. According to Gerstner, this topic was not even rudimentarily discussed on podiums; only in bilateral talks was it possible to raise awareness here. However, there are also rays of hope. Both in Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, biomass is definitely an issue, but there is often a lack of understanding of the different technologies, such as wood-burning stoves and storage heaters. Emission reduction devices are hardly known.

According to Gerstner, the industry has to do a lot of remedial work here: “We have to show our industry as it is: independent, efficient and innovation-driven.” The EFA and all its associated associations want to further intensify political work here and position the industry with self-confidence.
